"Portugal, Frustration and Pitta Imbalance"
|
When you moved to Portugal, did you go through a period of getting incredibly frustrated and irritated? If so, I wonder if you have Pitta in your body-mind dosha? Pitta is the constitution that helps us be visionary, focused and effective at achieving our goals. But, out-of-balance, it can make us critical, pushy and unhappy!
When we come from a culture that rewards achievement, Pitta imbalances can go unnoticed because the culture reinforces that it is good to get things done (even at the cost of our own, or others’ happiness). But when we move to a culture that is less achievement orientated, our Pitta imbalance can become very obvious!! As we become frustrated and irritated by the pace of progress and the level of disorganisation, our Pitta imbalance becomes even worse (because anger aggravates Pitta) and we can become almost venomously vocal in our criticisms and judgements. If this goes on for long enough, we turn that inwards and can become depressed and unmotivated. Has this happened to you? How did you deal with it? What learning can you share with others who maybe going through the same thing? Some of you may be thinking that this doesn’t sound like a very inspirational topic for our ‘Inspirational Lunches’ BUT I promise it will not turn into a ‘bitch-and-moan’ session. I will steer us through this topic so we can gain insight into all of our learnings and strength. I have personally found that Portugal has taught me how to use the force of my Pitta gracefully, effectively and sustainably and to stop being force-FULL – which was never actually effective in the long run. As well as hearing from all the wisdom in the room, I’ll be sharing Ayurvedic approaches to anger, frustration and irritation. We’ll look at how the elemental building blocks of matter (Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth) can help us. And look at the role of the Intellect in Pitta Imbalance. As always, bring along your lunch/brunch and perhaps something to share and enjoy a couple of hours of conversation that will inspire and inform you and build community with your fellow Pittas! Wednesday 13 December - "Ahimsa vs Tapas (Loving Kindness vs Discipline"
In the foundational text of yoga, Patanjali tells us in Verse 2.30 that the first step on the path towards Yoga is ‘Ahimsa’ – that is, stop causing pain. Ahimsa is also often translated as non-violence or loving kindness. Then in 2.32, he asks us to do ‘Tapas’ which can be translated at discipline or austerity.
When it comes to the self, how do we balance these two instructions? How do we be both kind to the self and be self-disciplined?
